Freaking sonnet…

I don’t like poetry that much you see

But Julia’s prompt has challenged us today

To write a poem for our honoree

Williams Shakespeare because it’s his birthday.

The form she gave is a sonnet, oh my–

I’m rolling my eyes and gnashing my teeth

At rhythms and rhymes shoved in fourteen lines.

In a minute I’ll remember to breathe.

Oh my God I have six more lines to write

I’m glad she didn’t give us an epic

If I had to write one of those tonight

I’m pretty sure that I’d be dyspeptic.

So happy birthday to you Will, my man.

Please don’t think I’ll ever do this again.

This is for the 100 Word Challenge at Julia’s Place. Write 14 lines, stay somewhere close to 100 words and if you want to use 10 syllables per line and the pattern a-b-a-b, c-d-c-d, e-f-e-f, g-g.

  1. I think we all had exactly the same reaction to sonnet writing this week!

    • Yes, I noticed when I put mine up that there were way fewer links already there than usual…

  2. Very funny poem! ((Although, if it’s Shakespearean, it has to be iambic)) lol.

    • Thanks. The assignment actually only required 14 lines and I tossed in the optional 10 syllables and rhyme pattern — if I’d had to do iambic pentameter too there wouldn’t be a poem!

  4. Well done ;O) I liked the line about getting dyspeptic!! Poetry is a bit like that I find. You described the challenge of writing admirably.

    • Thank you. I didn’t think I was going to get a more historic word in there until I found myself ending a line with “epic”…

  8. Oh this is just great! I don’t know why you thought it was too difficult. I really enjoyed the theme of sending it straight back to me!! Thank you so much for taking up this tricky challenge!
